Recent Reads

Recent Reads is where I talk about the last five books I finished reading that were not part of a specific tbr.

Ginger Pye by Eleanor Estes

This was a book I read for my long term reading goal of reading all of the Newbery Medal winners. This book won the prize in 1952. I did not enjoy this book, but pressed on so I could mark the box on my list. I would have DNFed it if not for the goal. It was a long, meandering, boring story about a dog that gets purchased and then stolen and then found. We have pages at a time of things that don’t move the plot along at all and I didn’t care about any of the characters. This was just not a book for me. I gave it ✰2✰

Lumberjanes Vol. 3: A Terrible Plan by Noelle Stevenson

I just didn’t really enjoy this volume at all. The art style threw me off from the first page and then the stories were not good. They were nothing like the first two volumes and I just didn’t like it. I gave it ✰2✰ and may not read any further in the series. Such a disappointment.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

This book was mostly confusing. I ended up giving it ✰3✰, but if I hadn’t been spoiled on the twist at the end I would have given it 2 stars. Knowing what was going on was the only reason I could make any sense at all out of the ending of the book. I can’t really say much about this book without spoiling it for you, but it’s basically supposed to be a story about a guy and his girlfriend driving for her to meet his parents for dinner and then they stop at a school to throw away some drinks. It’s more entertaining then that makes it sound, but not by much. I would read more by this author, but this book was just a bit too much for me.

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 2: Cycles by Brian K. Vaughan

Overall I enjoyed the continuation of this dystopian series. The story continued in a great way. I loved meeting new characters and seeing new places in the world and how they were getting along with the new world order. I’m confused by the sister’s actions. The last page of this volume had me anxious to read the next volume immediately to see what would happen. It’s on the way from the library. I gave this volume ✰4✰

Elevation by Stephen King

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. I used to love Stephen King books, but this was a short one and it sounded odd. It stayed just barely odd. My biggest issue was that there was just never an explanation of any sort. It just kind of started and it kind of ended. I liked the characters, but the story was pretty meh. I gave this book ✰3✰.
