The Goodreads was Wrong Book Tag

This tag was created by GabsAboutBooks on Youtube. The questions showcase books about which your ratings and the overall Goodreads ratings just don’t agree.

1. What is the highest rated book that you gave a low rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on Average Ratings and find the highest rated book you gave a low rating).

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo has a rating of 4.36 stars on Goodreads and I gave it ✰1✰ I read this book back in May 2017 and don’t remember much about why I disliked it so much, but I do recall that the main character, the rabbit, was a terrible ‘person.’ I thought he deserved everything that happened to him and I didn’t care if he had a happy ending or not.
2. What is the lowest rated book that you gave a high rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on Avg Ratings, in reverse order, and find the lowest rated book you gave a low rating).

Off Broadway by Sarah Kay Moll has an average rating of 3.39 stars and I rated it ✰5✰. It’s a short M/M romance that I remember enjoying. I read it in June of 2018.
3. What is the most popular book you disagree with the avg rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on number of Ratings, and find the first book you disagree with the avg rating)

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde has an average rating of 4.07 and I gave it ✰1✰. I hated this book. I thought it was really slow for the most part, but the pacing was really odd for the whole thing. This book has 793,368 total ratings.
4. What is the least popular book you disagree with the avg rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on number of Ratings, in reverse order, and find the first book you disagree with the avg rating).

Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks has an average rating of 4.05 stars and I rated it ✰2✰. I remember thinking it was boring when I read it in June of 2018, but don’t remember much of the storyline at this point. This book has 1404 total ratings.
5. Choose two books that have an average rating of 3/5 stars but you gave a higher rating.

Every Heart a Doorway by Senan McGuire has an average rating of 3.87 stars and I rated it ✰5✰. I love this series and can’t wait for my library to release the newest edition to the public to place on hold. I’ve been checking nearly every day.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders has 3.78 average rating and I gave it ✰5✰. I loved this book! I was worried about the set up of this book being only dialogue, but it’s amazing and I could not stop reading this book once I started.
6. Choose two books that have an average rating of 3/5 stars but you gave a lower rating.

The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan has an average rating of 3.89 stars and I rated it ✰2✰ when I read it in December of 2017. Also unfortunately I don’t remember this book at all.

Sleeping Giants by Sylvian Neuvel has an average rating of 3.85 stars and I rated it ✰2✰.  I remember the storyline of this book, but not what made me so bored or unimpressed.
7. Choose two books that have an average rating of 4/5 stars but you gave a lower rating.

Bone, Vol, 1: Out From Boneville by Jeff Smith has an average rating of 4.16, but I rated it ✰2✰ back in September of 2017. I don’t remember the story at all, but I do know we gave the book away after I read it.

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo has an average rating of 4.02 stars and I rated it ✰2✰. I don’t remember why I didn’t like this book either, but I removed the author from my to read list for good after this second dud. Technically, I will eventually have to read one more book by her to complete my reading of every Newbery Medal Award Winner, but I will putting it off until last I think.
8. Choose two books that have an average rating of 2/5 stars but you gave a higher rating.

There is only one book on my Goodreads that has a rating in the 2 star range and I also gave it 2 stars so I guess I don’t have an answer here.
9. Do you tend to agree or disagree with GR average rating and do you use GR as a guide for books you want to read?

I seem to generally agree with the average ratings on Goodreads. I don’t really use them as a guide for books I want to read though. I try not to look at ratings until after I choose my own rating. I get most of my recommendations from booktube or book blogs.

Do you rely on Goodreads ratings to make your reading choices?
