Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

Picture and quote from Goodreads

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .

What if their last shift was an adventure?

This was such a fun and cute story. I read it in an evening after a particularly hard day and it made me smile over and over. Deja and Josie are fun characters to follow on their hijinks. Even though I could see the ‘twist’ coming from the beginning it certainly didn’t make me enjoy the book any less. It was a great Fall read full if pumpkin patch pictures and fun. I would love to see more of their story.

  1. I’m glad to see you are in the Fall mood. We are late for it here, after just coming out of a record setting hot summer with over 90 days that were well over 90 degrees here. We didn’t cool off until just this past weekend! I’m sure glad it’s here now, my favorite season. You both have a lovely week and maybe more spooky reads 🙂

    1. I’m not a fan of Fall really, but Pepper is a very in to Fall and Halloween. It was in the 80s one day and the 60s the next day. And we happened to go to a pumpkin patch with all of her grandparents that weekend. She had so much fun!

      1. I’m so glad to hear she got to enjoy that. Reminds me of some of the best memories when my son was small and we lived up in Michigan and did similar stuff. Things you treasure.!
